“I want my lips to look more defined, but I don’t want them to look fake.”
This is one of the most common things I hear during consultations. Many people are interested in lip fillers but feel nervous about looking overdone, having too much volume or no longer looking like themselves.
My approach at Bella Medica Aesthetics is simple: listen carefully, assess your natural features and recommend only what is appropriate for you. Lip fillers should be about balance, shape and subtle enhancement, not changing your whole appearance.
I’m Dr Nabilah, a qualified GP and aesthetic doctor with more than 20 years of medical experience. I founded Bella Medica in 2008 to provide advanced aesthetic treatments in a safe, clinical environment, with honest advice at every stage.
What are lip fillers?
Lip fillers are a type of dermal filler used to enhance the shape, definition and volume of the lips. Most modern lip fillers are based on hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body.
Depending on your goals, treatment may be used to:
Add subtle volume
Define the lip border
Improve symmetry
Refine the Cupid’s bow
Create a more balanced upper and lower lip
Restore volume that has reduced over time
Soften fine vertical lines around the mouth where appropriate
There is no single “perfect” lip shape. Every face is different, and what looks natural on one person may not be right for another. During your consultation, I look at your facial proportions, existing lip shape and the result you would like to achieve.
At Bella Medica, I may use different techniques, including Russian lip or tenting techniques, where suitable. The technique is always selected according to your anatomy and aims rather than following a trend.

Will lip fillers look fake?
They should not look fake when the treatment is carefully planned and performed conservatively.
I understand why this is a concern. Images on social media can sometimes make lip filler appear synonymous with very large or dramatically projected lips. That is not the only possible outcome, and it is not the approach I take with every patient.
Some people want a very subtle improvement that is noticeable mainly to themselves. Others may want more definition or a clearer shape. Both are valid, provided the treatment is medically appropriate and the result remains harmonious with the rest of the face.
I avoid a “one size fits all” approach. Instead, I consider:
Your natural lip proportions
The relationship between your upper and lower lip
Your facial profile
The amount of existing tissue
Whether you have had filler previously
Your personal expectations
Sometimes the most natural result comes from starting with a smaller amount and reviewing the outcome once the filler has settled. It is often better to build gradually than to use too much product at the first appointment.
How much lip filler will I need?
There is no correct amount for everyone.
For some patients, 0.5ml may be enough to create a gentle improvement in definition. Others may require around 1ml to achieve the result they are seeking. The amount depends on your starting point, your anatomy and whether you are looking for shape, volume or both.
I will explain my recommendation during your consultation and talk through what the result may look like. I will not recommend more filler simply because more product is available. My priority is to give you an outcome that looks natural and suits you.
If you have previously had lip filler elsewhere, I may need to assess the existing product before recommending further treatment. In some cases, dissolving old hyaluronic acid filler may be more appropriate than adding more.
How much do lip fillers cost in Lancashire?
Our current online service listing shows lip filler at £270, with a £50 deposit required when booking. Prices and availability can change, so please check the booking page for the latest information.
The treatment price includes the consultation and the lip filler procedure, but your suitability must always be assessed first. If your needs are more complex, or if you have existing filler that requires review, I will discuss this with you before treatment.

Does lip filler hurt?
Most patients find the treatment manageable, although the lips can be a sensitive area.
Before beginning, I explain what to expect and use appropriate measures to improve comfort. You may feel a brief pinch, pressure or stinging sensation during the injections. The filler may also contain local anaesthetic, which can help as the treatment progresses.
I work carefully and take my time. If you are worried about discomfort, please tell me during your consultation. It is completely normal to feel nervous, especially if this is your first injectable treatment.
Afterwards, your lips may feel tender, tight or slightly numb for a short period. This usually improves as the initial swelling settles.
What happens during the appointment?
Your appointment takes place in a clean, professional clinical environment.
First, we discuss your concerns and the result you would like. I review your medical history, allergies, medications and any previous aesthetic treatments. I will also examine your lips and facial proportions.
If lip filler is suitable for you, I explain the proposed treatment, possible risks, expected recovery and aftercare. You will have the opportunity to ask questions before deciding whether to proceed.
The filler is then carefully placed into selected areas of the lips. The exact injection points and technique depend on your anatomy. Treatment usually takes approximately one hour, including time for consultation and preparation.
You can read more about consulting with Dr Nabilah before booking.

What should I expect after lip fillers?
Some immediate swelling, redness, tenderness or bruising is possible. The lips may initially look fuller than expected because of swelling, but this is not the final result.
Swelling is often most noticeable during the first 24 to 48 hours and generally improves over the following days. It can take up to two weeks for the lips to fully settle, depending on the individual.
For the first day or two, I usually advise patients to:
Avoid strenuous exercise
Avoid alcohol
Avoid excessive heat, saunas and steam rooms
Avoid pressing, rubbing or massaging the lips unless instructed
Use a cold compress intermittently if helpful
Sleep with your head slightly elevated if swelling is bothersome
Avoid facial treatments until the area has healed
I provide personalised aftercare advice after your appointment. Bella Medica also has a post-procedure advice line available with Dr Nabilah, so you can contact us if you have concerns during your recovery.
Severe or worsening pain, marked skin discolouration, rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness or difficulty breathing is not something to ignore. Contact the clinic urgently or seek emergency medical help if you experience these symptoms.
For further general information about dermal filler safety, you can read the FDA’s guidance on dermal fillers.
How long do lip fillers last?
Lip filler results are temporary. Many people find that lip fillers last approximately six to 12 months, although this varies.
Longevity depends on:
The product used
The amount injected
Your metabolism
How quickly your body breaks down hyaluronic acid
The movement of your lips
Whether you have had lip filler previously
The result will gradually soften as the filler is naturally broken down. Some patients choose maintenance appointments once or twice a year, while others prefer to wait until the product has mostly settled before deciding what to do next.
There is no requirement to continue treatment. I will always give you honest advice about whether a top-up is necessary or whether it is better to wait.
Why choose Dr Nabilah for lip fillers?
Lip filler is a medical procedure, so the experience and clinical judgement of the practitioner matter.
At Bella Medica, you are treated by Dr Nabilah in a doctor-led clinic with more than 15 years of aesthetic experience and over 20 years’ experience as a qualified GP. I believe in careful assessment, clear communication and natural-looking results.
Most importantly, I will tell you if I do not think lip filler is suitable or if your expectations need to be adjusted. A consultation should not feel like a sales appointment. You should have the information you need to make a comfortable, informed decision.
